The present invention relates to a liquid crystal display, and more particularly, to a liquid crystal display having an apparatus for aligning liquid crystals.
2. Description of the Related Art
The liquid crystal display (LCD) is one of the most widely used flat panel displays. The liquid crystal display has a pair of display substrates, and a liquid crystal layer interposed therebetween. Electrodes are formed on the display substrates and a voltage is applied to the electrodes to form an electric field to the liquid crystal layer to control the light transmittance of the liquid crystal layer and display images.
Recently, a new display mode called an “in-plane switching (IPS) mode” has been suggested to replace the TN (“twisted nematic”) mode and to reduce a large color shift. In the IPS mode, a pixel electrode and a common electrode are formed in parallel to each other on a display substrate. Further, the liquid crystal is driven by a horizontal electric field that is parallel to the substrate surface.
FIG. 1 is a cross-sectional view of a related art liquid crystal display. As shown in FIG. 1, an array substrate 2 has a plurality of gate lines 4 and a plurality of data lines 6, a thin film transistor (TFT) 10, a pixel electrode 22 and a common electrode 24. The plurality of gate lines 4 and the plurality of data lines 6 cross each other, thereby defining a plurality of pixel regions P. The TFT 10 is disposed at a crossing of the gate line 4 and the data line 6, and electrically connected to the pixel electrode 22 and the common electrode 24. The common electrode 24 is formed in parallel to the gate line 4.
The TFT 10 includes a gate electrode 12, an active layer 14, a source electrode 16 and a drain electrode 18. A pixel electrode 22 is formed in the pixel region P, and connected to the drain electrode 18 of the TFT 10. The common electrode 24 is formed in parallel to the gate line 4 and connected to the common electrode 24. A common electrode forming region 20 is formed in an area in which the common electrode 24 overlaps the gate line 4.
A color filter substrate 8 is formed opposite to the array substrate 2, and a liquid crystal layer LC is interposed between the array substrate 2 and the color filter substrate 8.
